Basic Training

To train for Easter Venture it is highly recommended that each team goes on at least one practice hike before the event. Like EV, this hike should be navigated using map and compass and grid point references.

Team members should come to EV with a reasonable level of fitness - the hike will not be strenuous but will be challenging.

The weather at Easter can be hot, cold or wet or any combination of these across the weekend. You should make sure you have appropriate hike gear (and costumes) to cope with any weather conditions.

Teams should try to plan a simple but nutritious and interesting menu for the weekend. Remember also to bring high energy snacks to keep you going before and after the lunch checkpoint.

Make sure you have good hiking boots. If your boots are new - wear them in well before Easter Venture or your hike will be most unpleasant.

Costumes and props are an important part of a teams preparations - remember to consider weather conditions and ability to hike when designing your costumes but generally, the more over the top - the better!

When packing for Easter Venture you will need at least:

  • Enough breakfast for each team member for 3 days.
  • Enough lunch for each team member for 4 days.
  • Enough evening meals for each team member for 2 days.
  • Clothing, tentage (no hoochies allowed, separate tents for males and females required) and sleeping bags.
  • Sun screen and a hat for each person.
  • Each team must carry at least one first aid kit (preferably one per person) - you must be able to care for your own blisters.
  • 2 billies of a 1 litre capacity.
  • Drink bottles - each team must be able to carry at least 2 litres of drinking water (fresh water will be available during the hike).
  • A working compass, pens/pencils and a note book.

Urban Venture 2001

Each year, around one month before Easter Venture we hold another State event called Urban Venture. This event is a night time urban hike and this year will be held on 16th of March.

This event is completely separate from EV and is designed to be a fun and free activity for every member of every unit.

Although you don't need to be going to EV to enjoy UV, we do ask that all EV entrants attempt to attend Urban Venture. At the very least there must be at least one member of every EV team present at UV.

During Urban Venture 2001, of between 3 and 6 people will navigate their way to checkpoints where they will be given information and 'insider tips' on EV and get to do activities that will earn them UV-points.

The team with the most points at the end of the evening will win the Urban Venture 2001 trophy.

To enter Urban Venture there are no fees or application forms needed, just turn up with your team on the night. Each team will, however, need to bring 1 packed hike pack as an example of how you would pack for EV. The pack should contain 1 day's food, clothing and camping needs for at least 1 person.

Urban Venture 2001 will begin at the Linden Park Scout Hall, Kennaway Street, Tusmore on Friday 16th of March 2001 at 7.00pm.
